Donnafugata Contrada Marchesa Etna Rosso DOC

Donnafugata Contrada Marchesa Etna Rosso DOC
Nerello Mascalese from the northern slopes of Mount Etna — cool, mineral, with a surprising depth. Contrada Marchesa demonstrates why Sicily's volcanic wines are no longer a hidden gem.
Donnafugata, one of Sicily's most renowned wine families, cultivates individual plots on Mount Etna for its Contrada wines—each with its own distinct character. The Marchesa plot is located on the northern slope, where the long, cool growing seasons ensure exceptional finesse. Fourteen months of aging in barriques give the wine structure without overpowering its volcanic origin.
In the glass: Garnet red with a light rim, typical of Nerello Mascalese. The nose reveals red cherries, dried raspberries, and blood orange, underpinned by lava minerality and a hint of smoke. Silky on the palate, with fine tannins and lively acidity—the finish is long, saline, with notes of herbs and tobacco. Awarded the Gold Medal at the Berlin Wine Trophy (2017 vintage) and 92 points by James Suckling (2016 vintage).
Serving temperature 16–18 °C. Drinking window until 2028. Pairs well with braised lamb with olives, grilled tuna or mature Pecorino Siciliano.
