Winzer Sommerach Katzenkopf Riesling dry

Shell limestone noticeably shapes this Riesling from the Katzenkopf vineyard: the minerality runs deep, the wine has drive and length.

The Winzer Sommerach are one of the most traditional wine cooperatives in Franconia, founded in 1901 at the Volkach Mainbogen. The Katzenkopf vineyard lies on pure shell limestone – geologically the classic Franconian subsoil, which gives Rieslings their typical bone structure and aging potential. The southwest-facing slope is the most famous vineyard in Sommerach and stands for defined origin and artisanal care.

In the glass, the Riesling shows aromas of citrus zest, green apple, and white peach, underpinned by a fine chalky tone that makes the shell limestone directly palpable. The acidity is taut but not edgy – it gives the wine liveliness and length. The finish is mineral-salty, dry, and persistent.

Winzer Sommerach

Winzer Sommerach is the oldest winegrowers' cooperative in Franconia – founded in 1901 by 35 winegrowing families who joined forces to survive during a time of phylloxera infestation and plummeting prices. Today, 90 families carry on this tradition, cultivating around 200 hectares on the Main River loop and tending the Sommeracher Katzenkopf vineyard, one of the most important sites in the region. Their motto, "High standards make the difference," is not just a slogan: every bottle can be traced back to a specific winegrower and their vineyard – transparency and community as a lived principle for over 120 years.
