Philipp Kuhn Dirmsteiner Chardonnay from calcareous marl, dry
A Chardonnay from the Palatinate that shows why calcareous marl and Burgundian oak go so well together: powerful, but with a clear line.
The Philipp Kuhn winery in Laumersheim is one of the most reliable producers in the Palatinate for structured white wines. The vines for this Chardonnay grow on Dirmstein limestone marl with black earth components—a soil that imparts minerality and depth to the wine without suppressing the fruit. Aging takes place partly in French oak barrels and partly in stainless steel tanks: this preserves the freshness, while the oak contributes richness and body.
In the glass, ripe pear and yellow apple, along with a hint of shortbread and white peach. The palate is full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and well-integrated acidity—not an angular, but a round, warm Chardonnay. The finish is long with a subtle minerality.
Serving temperature: 12–14 °C. Pairs well with chicken breast in cream sauce, grilled salmon, pasta with mushrooms, or strong soft cheese. If you like it, drink it now—this wine isn't designed for long aging.
