Matthias Gaul Pinot Noir Steinrassel

The Matthias Gaul Pinot Noir Steinrassel is not a wine you drink casually. It's one that makes you pause and reflect.

Matthias Gaul is one of the quiet giants of the Palatinate – a winemaker who prefers working in the vineyard to making headlines. The fact that his Steinrassel won the German Red Wine Award in 2015 only comes as a surprise to everyone. Those who have tasted it simply nod in agreement.

The Steinrassel vineyard gives this Pinot Noir its character: stony, calcareous soils, a microclimate that retains heat and preserves freshness. Gaul works with low yields and gives the grapes the time they need. The result is a wine of vibrant elegance – delicate red fruit, silky tannins, a depth that unfolds in the glass rather than imposing itself.

Serve it at 16–18 °C and let it breathe a little. It will thank you for it.

Goes particularly well with:

  • Roast duck or game dishes
  • Mature goat cheese
  • A quiet evening without any particular occasion – sometimes that's the best.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
