Mittelheim St. Nikolaus Riesling GG
The Mittelheim St. Nikolaus is one of the most idiosyncratic Grosses Gewächs of the Rheingau — not a pleasing instant-drinker, but a Riesling that needs time and rewards it.
The Spreitzer winery has been cultivating the Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus site in Oestrich-Winkel for generations. The steep slope above the Rhine provides fruit with unusual depth: earthy minerality that runs through every sip, and a fruit structure that will continue to unfold for years.
In the glass, it shows a cool, floral scent — rose blossom, a hint of curry spice, and delicate yellow fruit (mirabelle, mandarin), underscored by slightly yeasty, earthy tones. On the palate, then dense, herbal-vegetal aromas alongside almond-nutty traces and a very fine, precise acidity. The finish is long, slightly sweet with a grip that signals structure: this wine has not yet reached its goal. A hint of butter and spice rounds off the impression.
2026–2035. Currently still undeveloped — those who bring patience will be rewarded with more complexity.
Temperature: 11–13 °C.
Food: Zander fillet with herb butter, poultry in cream sauce, mature Comté, or spicy soft cheeses.

The German winery Spreitzer from the Rheingau was founded as early as 1641 and is today owned by Andreas and Bernd Spreitzer. It is located directly on the Rhine, not far from the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden, and has a total vineyard area of 30 ha, which is distributed over four sites. Among the best sites of the winery are Oestricher Lenchen and Doosberg. A special feature of the winery is the vaulted cellar from the year 1745, in which the produced wines are stored. The soils of the sites consist of loess loam, marl, and partly of quartzite and offer the vines, due to the proximity to the Rhine, an excellent water supply. At Weingut Spreitzer, 97% of the Riesling grape variety is grown and only a small percentage of Pinot Noir. In total, the winery produces and sells approximately 160,000 bottles of wine.
