Variegated slate Riesling

A Riesling from the highest point of the Rheingau — lean, mineral, with that characteristic salty streak left by variegated slate soils.

The Spreitzer winery in Oestrich-Winkel is one of the most reliable addresses in the Rheingau. The family consistently works out the Hallgarten sites — vineyards on Taunus quartzite and variegated slate, significantly cooler than the Rhine bank sites, with a correspondingly crisp acidity structure. 11.5% ABV is no coincidence here, but the natural result of this high altitude.

In the glass, it shows lemon zest, white peach, and a mineral-stony undertone reminiscent of wet slate. The body is lean and taut, the acidity is lively without sharpness, and the finish is long with that slightly salty note typical of quartzite weathering soils.

Spreitzer

VDP Member Estate

The German winery Spreitzer from the Rheingau was founded as early as 1641 and is today owned by Andreas and Bernd Spreitzer. It is located directly on the Rhine, not far from the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden, and has a total vineyard area of 30 ha, which is distributed over four sites. Among the best sites of the winery are Oestricher Lenchen and Doosberg. A special feature of the winery is the vaulted cellar from the year 1745, in which the produced wines are stored. The soils of the sites consist of loess loam, marl, and partly of quartzite and offer the vines, due to the proximity to the Rhine, an excellent water supply. At Weingut Spreitzer, 97% of the Riesling grape variety is grown and only a small percentage of Pinot Noir. In total, the winery produces and sells approximately 160,000 bottles of wine.
