Schäfer-Fröhlich Riesling Schiefestein Schäfer Fröhlich QbA dry

Slate, salt, draft — the entry-level Riesling from Schäfer-Fröhlich shows what the Nahe region can achieve on slate soils.

Winery: Tim Fröhlich has been running the family winery in Bockenau in the northern Nahe region since 2004 and is now one of the most sought-after Riesling producers in Germany. The "Schiefergestein" (Slate Rock) is the entry-level wine in the range — vinified from grapes grown on slate soils, perfectly encapsulating the estate's style.

In the glass: A stony, salty nose with Boskoop apple and a distinct slate note. On the palate, it is delicately juicy and lively, with pronounced minerality and a firm structure. The finish is long, rich in extract, and lingers with a hint of tart apple—not a decorative wine, but one with real character.

Serving suggestion: 10–12 °C. Pairs well with pan-fried whitefish or trout, goat cheese, tarte flambée, or steamed vegetables with herb oil. Best enjoyed by 2027.

Schäfer-Fröhlich

The Schäfer-Fröhlich winery originates in the picturesque Nahe Valley in Germany and boasts a long family tradition of winemaking. Since 1800, the Schäfer family has dedicated itself to cultivating grapevines and producing high-quality wines. Today, the winery is managed by Tim Fröhlich, who combines his ancestors' traditions with modern winemaking techniques. The estate stretches across the hills of the Nahe Valley and benefits from the region's unique climatic and geological conditions. The vineyards are primarily planted with Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes, which find ideal conditions here to produce wines of exceptional quality. The Schäfer-Fröhlich winery's portfolio comprises an impressive selection of wines that reflect the diversity and quality of the Nahe region. The Rieslings, in particular, are the winery's hallmark and are known for their elegance, freshness, and longevity. In addition, the winery also produces excellent Burgundy wines as well as other varieties that perfectly express the terroir and the winemaker's skill. At Schäfer-Fröhlich, quality is paramount. The winery relies on meticulous handwork in the vineyard and gentle processing of the grapes in the cellar to unlock the full potential of the wines. Winemaking is carried out using traditional methods and state-of-the-art viticultural techniques to produce wines of the highest quality and authenticity.
