Riesling Altenberg Spätlese

The late harvest from Altenberg shows what the Saar is capable of: precise fruit, lively acidity and a sweetness that never feels heavy.

Von Othegraven is one of the most traditional wineries on the Saar. The Kanzemer Altenberg vineyard – steep, with slate-rich soil and extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night – yields Riesling with the characteristic Saar tension: delicate, mineral, and age-worthy. The winery has been part of the von Heyl family since 2010 and is managed with a clear focus on Rieslings from steep slopes.

In the glass, ripe yellow peach and apricot are revealed, along with dried mango and a hint of honey in the background. The acidity is firm but not harsh – it supports the residual sweetness without the wine ever feeling cloying. The finish is long, with a subtle slate note that adds depth.

von Othegraven

Maximilian von Othegraven – a winery steeped in history. Founded in the early 16th century, it enjoys a romantic location on the banks of the Saar River, opposite the village of Kanzem, surrounded by a park with rare trees. Family-owned since 1805, the estate was taken over by Günther Jauch and Dorothea Sihler-Jauch from their great-aunt in 2010. With an uncompromising commitment to quality, they have elevated it to the top ranks of German Riesling producers. Right outside the door: the south-facing Kanzemer Altenberg vineyard – one of Germany's greatest Grand Crus. Mineral intensity, delicate fruit spice, vineyard peach, ripe apples. Floral, balanced, magnificent.
