Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Auslese

Auslese from the Saar with drive: fruit and extract sweetness meet a taut acidity structure, plus a cool, stony line that takes away any heaviness from the wine.

The Kanzemer Altenberg is one of the well-known steep slopes in the Saar valley, which belongs to the Mosel wine-growing region. The von Othegraven winery bottles a Riesling here that was spontaneously fermented. This shows in the cool nose as a fine yeast note, accompanied by stone, citrus fruit, and pome fruit.

On the palate, the wine is clear and juicy, fresh and with distinct drive. Yellow fruit, light flowers, and citrus peel stand alongside stony minerality. The sweetness fits well into the acidity and makes the wine elegant rather than lush. In the retro-nasal aroma, stony notes remain, which extend into the long finish.

Serve it at 8 to 10 °C. It pairs with fried duck liver, mild blue cheese, spicy Thai dishes with coconut and lime, or desserts with apple and quince. It works just as well solo as the conclusion of an evening.

The Winery

von Othegraven

VDP Member Estate

Maximilian von Othegraven – a winery with history. Founded in the early 16th century, it is romantically situated on the Saar, opposite the village of Kanzem, surrounded by a park with rare trees. In the family since 1805.

In 2010, Günther Jauch and Dorothea Sihler-Jauch took over the estate from their great-aunt. With an uncompromising commitment to quality, they led it to the top of German Riesling producers.

Right outside the door: the south-facing Kanzemer Altenberg – one of the truly great German Grand Crus. Mineral density, delicate fruity spice, vineyard peach, ripe apples. Floral, balanced, magnificent.
