von Othegraven Riesling sparkling wine brut

Riesling and sparkling wine – this is not uncommon on the Saar, but rarely executed with such precision. This Brut from Othegraven demonstrates what the cool Saar region can offer a sparkling wine: tension, minerality, and genuine varietal character.

The von Othegraven winery is one of the most traditional estates on the Saar. The steep slopes around Kanzem produce Rieslings with a clear acidity and stony character – qualities that give a sparkling wine significantly more backbone than those from warmer growing regions.

Straw yellow in the glass with fine bubbles. The nose offers ripe Golden Delicious apples, Williams pear, and yellow grapefruit, underpinned by a stony minerality and subtle herbal spice. On the palate, lively acidity balances the richness of the fruit—not an opulent, but a taut, straightforward sparkling wine with a juicy, dry finish.

Maximilian von Othegraven – a winery steeped in history. Founded in the early 16th century, it enjoys a romantic location on the banks of the Saar River, opposite the village of Kanzem, surrounded by a park with rare trees. Family-owned since 1805, the estate was taken over by Günther Jauch and Dorothea Sihler-Jauch from their great-aunt in 2010. With an uncompromising commitment to quality, they have elevated it to the top ranks of German Riesling producers. Right outside the door: the south-facing Kanzemer Altenberg vineyard – one of Germany's greatest Grand Crus. Mineral intensity, delicate fruit spice, vineyard peach, ripe apples. Floral, balanced, magnificent.
