Mantsch Lagrein Riserva

The Mantsch Lagrein Riserva shows the dark, powerful side of South Tyrol: deep dark ruby red in the glass, a red wine with edges that combines structure and maturity.

The Kellerei Schreckbichl (Colterenzio) in Eppan is one of the defining cooperative wineries in South Tyrol. Lagrein is an autochthonous grape variety that traditionally grows on the sandy, alluvial soils in the Bolzano basin near Gries – warm, sheltered sites that give the variety its dense color and powerful tannin structure. For the Riserva, selected grapes are aged longer in barriques, which gives the wine additional depth.

On the nose, blackberry, dark cherry, and plum, underpinned by cocoa and a hint of vanilla from the wood. On the palate, velvety tannins, juicy fruit, and a spicy, long finish with slightly earthy notes. The Riserva aging rounds off the powerful structure of the variety without smoothing out its edges.

Best served at 16–18 °C, decanted half an hour before drinking. A wine for South Tyrolean speck, game dishes, roast beef, or mature mountain cheese – ideal for cooler evenings and hearty cuisine.
