Schreckbichl Kalterersee Auslese classic

The Kalterersee Auslese klassisch from Kellerei Schreckbichl appears bright in the glass and is uncomplicated to drink – a red wine for a casual table. The term "Auslese" here refers to the traditional quality level of the growing region, not to residual sugar.

Kellerei Schreckbichl, better known as Colterenzio, is located in Girlan near Kaltern in South Tyrol, directly above the eponymous Lake Kaltern. The vines grow on calcareous, mineral soils at the edge of the Überetsch – a landscape that has offered good conditions for Vernatsch, the lead grape variety of Lake Kaltern, for centuries.

In the glass, aromas of sour cherry and wild strawberry dominate, underscored by the typical light bitter almond note on the finish that makes Vernatsch unmistakable. The tannins are fine, the acidity fresh, the body lean – a wine without any rough edges.

It tastes best slightly chilled at 14 to 16 °C, with South Tyrolean speck, Schlutzkrapfen, or simply with a snack platter outdoors.
