Schreckbichl St. Magdalener

The St. Magdalener from the Schreckbichl estate proves to be a typical representative of its origin: light-footed, uncomplicated, and with that velvety freshness that the Schiava grape produces in the hills around Bolzano. A red wine for carefree enjoyment without much fuss.

The Schreckbichl winery, also known as Colterenzio, is one of the established cooperative wineries in South Tyrol, based in Eppan. The grapes for this St. Magdalener come from the sun-drenched steep slopes around the eponymous St. Magdalena hill near Bolzano, where Schiava (Vernatsch) is traditionally blended with a small portion of Lagrein – for additional color depth and structure.

In the glass, it reveals bright cherry, violets, and a hint of almond, accompanied by a fine spicy note. On the palate, the wine appears lean, with soft tannins and a juicy pull. The finish remains short and lively, with a final hint of bright cherry.

Serve it at 14 to 16 °C; it unfolds its interplay of aromas best when slightly chilled. It pairs well with South Tyrolean speck, Schlutzkrapfen, or grilled vegetables and is equally suitable for a convivial evening that requires no great ceremony.
