Guado al Tasso Matarocchio 3.0 l Antinori

Single-varietal Cabernet Franc from Tuscany — that is rare enough to prick up your ears. The Matarocchio from Guado al Tasso shows what this grape variety can do when it gets the space it deserves.

The Guado al Tasso winery belongs to the Antinori family and is located in the Bolgheri DOC on the Tuscan coast. The mild Mediterranean climate and the mineral-rich soils of this Maremma appellation give Cabernet Franc a ripeness that is hardly achievable in cooler sites. The Matarocchio is the single-varietal counter-design to the estate's well-known Bolgheri Superiore — concentrated on a single grape variety that unfolds its full profile here.

On the nose, dark plum and blackberry appear, underlaid by mint and a hint of peperoncino. With some air, roasted coffee and bitter cocoa are added — a typical depth of well-aged barriques. On the palate, it presents itself full-bodied and long, with silky tannins and a lingering finish in which mint and cocoa reappear.

The Winery

Guado al Tasso

Super Tuscans – a style that changed the wine world. What began with Mario Incisa della Rocchetta's private Cabernet cultivation was perfected by his nephew Piero Antinori and oenologist Giacomo Tachis: the world-famous Sassicaia. Shortly thereafter followed Tignanello – Sangiovese without any white wine content.

Because the laws only allowed them to be classified as "table wine," prices rose to astronomical levels. Today, Sassicaia, Tignanello, Masseto, and Ornellaia are among the icons. What they have in common: structure, full-bodiedness, and the courage to innovate.
