Catore Alghero Torbato DOC

Torbato is one of Sardinia's oldest grape varieties – and Sella & Mosca saved it from extinction. The Catore shows why that was a good decision.

The Sella & Mosca winery is located near Alghero in northwestern Sardinia. Founded in 1899, it is now one of the island's most important wineries. The Torbato grapes grow on calcareous sandy soils near the coast, where the sea breeze provides natural cooling. Vinification is carried out gently at controlled temperatures to preserve the varietal's characteristic freshness.

In the glass, the Catore shines straw yellow with green reflections. The nose reveals pear, white peach, and chamomile, along with a hint of yeasty pastry and a mineral undertone. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with lively acidity without harshness and a creamy texture. The finish is dry and slightly salty – a typical sign of the vineyards' proximity to the sea. No oak notes, just a clear fruit profile.

Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Drinking window 2024–2027 – at its peak now. Pairs well with grilled sea bass, bottarga pasta, seafood, or a young pecorino sardo. Also a good choice as an aperitif with focaccia and olives.

Sella & Mosca

The Italian winery Sella & Mosca was founded in 1899 by Emilio Sella and Edgardo Mosca. Located on the island of Sardinia, near the city of Alghero, it is now owned by the Campari Group. A total of 550 hectares of vineyards are used to cultivate grapes for the production of both white and red wines. The volcanic soils, combined with the local Mediterranean climate, provide perfect conditions for vine growth. Grape varieties used for red wine production include Connonau, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignano, and Merlot. Sella & Mosca's white wines are made from grape varieties such as Vermentino, Sauvignon Blanc, and Torbato.
