Cà Maiol Fabio Contato Valtenesi Rosso DOP

A red wine from the western Lake Garda area that shows what the Valtenesi hills can extract from Groppello and classic Lombard grape varieties: dark fruit, earthy depth, and a tannin with bite.

Cà Maiol is one of the most famous wineries on the western shore of Lake Garda. The sites around Padenghe sul Garda provide calcareous moraine soils that give the Groppello – the lead grape variety of the Valtenesi – its characteristic spice. The Fabio Contato is the estate's Riserva line, named after the long-time cellar master.

In the glass, it shows aromas of black currant, bay leaf, and a mineral graphite undertone. The palate is medium-bodied in structure: ripe tannin, lively acidity, long finish with a slightly tart herbal note – typical for Groppello-dominated cuvées from this corner of Lombardy.

Drinking recommendation: Good with wild boar salami, risotto with mushrooms, or grilled lamb chop. Serving temperature 16–18 °C.

Cà Maiol

Cà Maiol is an Italian winery founded in 1967 by Walter Contato. The family business is now run by the second generation, Fabio and Patrizia Contato. Located at the southern end of Lake Garda, the winery owns approximately 140 hectares of vineyards with calcareous clay soils. Thanks to its proximity to Lake Garda, the region also enjoys a very mild climate. Among the grape varieties cultivated are Trbbiano di Lugano, Marzemino, Gropello, and Sangiovese.
