Cà Maiol Fabio Contato Valtenesi Rosso DOP
A red wine from the western shore of Lake Garda that shows what the Valtenesi hills can produce from Groppello and classic Lombardy grape varieties: dark fruit, earthy depth and a tannin with bite.
Cà Maiol is one of the most renowned wineries on the western shore of Lake Garda. The vineyards around Padenghe sul Garda provide calcareous moraine soils, which give Groppello – the flagship grape variety of Valtenesi – its characteristic spiciness. The Fabio Contato is the estate's Riserva line, named after its long-serving winemaker.
In the glass, it displays aromas of blackcurrant, bay leaf, and a mineral, graphite undertone. The palate is medium-bodied: ripe tannins, lively acidity, a long finish with a slightly bitter herbal note – typical of Groppello-dominated blends from this corner of Lombardy.
Serving suggestion: Pairs well with wild boar salami, mushroom risotto, or grilled lamb chop. Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Drinking window: now until 2028.
