Quinta de Vargellas
Quinta de Vargellas is the heart of Taylor's – a single vineyard in the eastern Douro, from which the house has sourced its finest vintage ports since 1893.
Taylor's is one of the oldest British port houses, founded in 1692, and remains independent to this day. Quinta de Vargellas is situated at an altitude of 400–500 meters in the Douro Superior, where summers are extremely hot and dry. Only in exceptional years does Taylor's declare a Vintage Port – two years of cask aging, followed by decades of bottle development.
In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red with violet reflections. The nose offers aromas of violets, blackberry, and a hint of mace. On the palate, it is velvety, with ripe, concentrated fruit, firmly integrated tannins, and a long, spicy finish. With bottle aging, notes of cedar, dried plums, and dark chocolate develop.
Serving suggestion: Serve at 16–18 °C. Ideally decant two to three hours beforehand. Pairs well with Stilton, dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), or as a finale to a meal.
