Cà dei Frati I Frati Lugana DOC – Cà dei Frati (Italy, Lombardy)
The Dal Cero family cultivates their vineyards on the characteristic calcareous-clay soils south of the Sirmione peninsula. This special terroir and the constant winds of Lake Garda ensure the slow ripening of the Turbiana grapes. Genetically closely related to Trebbiano di Soave, this grape variety develops tremendous aromatic depth here. In the glass, the wine initially unfolds cool aromas of white spring blossoms, ripe apricot, and a hint of citrus zest. Underpinned by a delicate almond note and a subtle, almost balsamic herbal tone, this fruitiness is complemented by a fine almond note and a discreet, almost balsamic, herbal character. On the palate, a remarkable structure is revealed: the texture is full-bodied and luscious, yet punctuated by a precise, vibrant acidity that lightens the wine. The finish is long, marked by a saline minerality, and leaves a clean mouthfeel. If you cellar one or two bottles from this package for a few years, you will notice how the primary fruit flavors recede. With increasing bottle maturation within the drinking window until 2028, complex spice notes, hints of candied fruit and a remarkable depth develop, proving the great aging potential of these Lake Garda vineyards.
This wine pairs well with: a classic risotto with pike-perch or pike from the lake, grilled whitefish from Lake Constance with herb butter, or creamy pasta with fresh seafood. The acidity of Turbiana also provides an excellent contrast to light poultry with lemon-caper sauce or a mild, semi-ripe goat cheese. It is best served at a temperature of 10 to 12 °C in a medium-sized white wine glass.
