Hipping Riesling GG QW Rheinhessen 0.75L

The Roter Hang in Nierstein is one of Germany's most famous Riesling sites — red Rotliegend sandstone that stores heat and gives the vines a mineral depth that is rarely as pronounced elsewhere. The Kühling-Gillot winery, a staple in Rheinhessen for decades and certified organic, produces a Grosses Gewächs from the Hipping site that transfers the character of this soil directly into the glass.

In the glass, the wine glows in a rich yellow. The nose reveals stone fruit aromas — ripe mirabelle, a hint of apricot — complemented by spicy nuances of sesame and green tea, which give the Riesling an unusual complexity. Dry and taut on the palate, with a lively acidity that keeps the wine light-footed despite its density. The finish is long, salty-mineral, and shows the typical signature of the Roter Hang.

Best served at 10–12 °C. Pairs well with dishes with a clear acidic structure: zander on beurre blanc, grilled scallops with lemon butter, or a mature Comté. The wine also pairs harmoniously with Asian-spiced dishes — miso salmon, ginger prawns.

The Winery

Weingut Kühling-Gillot

VDP Member Estate

The winery of Carolin and Oliver Battenfeld is located on the Rhine terrace. The special thing about Kühling-Gillot is the biodynamics that have been practiced since 2005. For Carolin and Oliver Battenfeld, the brown hare embodies the symbol of fertility and joie de vivre.

In recent years, the winery has developed into one of the absolute top estates in Germany. The slate subsoil of the famous Roter Hang around Nierstein and Nackenheim creates wines that, with their mixture of fine fruit and vibrant minerality, represent something like the ideal type of a great dry wine.
