Schmitges Winery

The Schmitges family – sixth-generation Riesling makers, unconventional thinkers and newcomers to the industry. Andreas and Kilian focus on deliberately low yields, ungrafted vines, and meticulous vinification. Hand-harvesting, gentle processing, cool, slow, sometimes spontaneous fermentation – the result: individual Rieslings that perfectly reflect the vintage and vineyard site. Their passion lies with the steep slopes: Erdener Prälat and Erdener Treppchen. What does that mean? Up to 100 percent manual labor – not just during the harvest. Immense effort, physical exertion, and maximum passion. And you can taste it in every sip.

Six generations of Riesling –
from the heart of Erdener's steep slopes

Andreas and Kilian Schmitges cultivate the Erdener Prälat and Erdener Treppchen vineyards with up to 100% manual labor. Own-rooted vines, deliberately low yields, cool and sometimes spontaneous fermentation – this is how Rieslings are created that immediately reflect the vintage and the vineyard site.
