Schmitges Riesling Grauschiefer dry
Gray slate characterizes this Riesling from the Schmitges winery on the Moselle — mineral, taut, with a fruit precision that is typical for the region.
Schmitges is a traditional family winery in Erden on the Middle Moselle that cultivates its Riesling sites on gray and blue slate. The slate soil stores heat, releases the heat to the vines at night, and leaves its fingerprint directly in the glass. This wine is made from selective hand-picking, six hours of skin contact, and gentle pressing — then fermented at a constant 16 °C for three months and aged in stainless steel to keep the fruit clear.
In the glass, it shows aromas of white peach, lime zest, and a subtle mineral undertone. The acidity is present but integrated — not an attack, but a calm framework that gives the wine length. The finish is salty-dry with a hint of flint.
Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Pairs well with whitefish or trout from the oven, asparagus dishes with hollandaise sauce, or an aged goat cheese.

The Schmitges family – sixth-generation Riesling makers, unconventional thinkers and newcomers to the industry. Andreas and Kilian focus on deliberately low yields, ungrafted vines, and meticulous vinification. Hand-harvesting, gentle processing, cool, slow, sometimes spontaneous fermentation – the result: individual Rieslings that perfectly reflect the vintage and vineyard site. Their passion lies with the steep slopes: Erdener Prälat and Erdener Treppchen. What does that mean? Up to 100 percent manual labor – not just during the harvest. Immense effort, physical exertion, and maximum passion. And you can taste it in every sip.
