Schmitges Riesling Kabinett Urgestein dry

A Mosel Riesling that shows why gray slate and the Kabinett style go so well together: fine fruit, lively acidity, mineral drive – no frills.

Weingut Schmitges from Erden on the Middle Mosel works with selective hand-harvesting and six hours of skin contact before the grapes are gently pressed. Fermentation takes place at 16 °C over three months – slow, controlled, and focused on preserving aromas. The wine then matures exclusively in stainless steel with a short period on the lees, which supports the fruit without overpowering it.

In the glass, it has a light straw color. The nose shows lemon zest, white peach, and a hint of green gooseberry. On the palate, the wine feels lean and precise – the acidity is lively but without sharpness, and underneath lies a fine slate-mineral note that carries through to the finish. No sugar to distract: dry, straightforward, long.

Serving suggestion: Served at 10–12 °C, it pairs well with river trout with herb butter, goat cheese, or a light asparagus salad with vinaigrette. It also works well as a glass for a summer evening on its own.

Weingut Schmitges

The Schmitges family – sixth-generation Riesling makers, unconventional thinkers and newcomers to the industry. Andreas and Kilian focus on deliberately low yields, ungrafted vines, and meticulous vinification. Hand-harvesting, gentle processing, cool, slow, sometimes spontaneous fermentation – the result: individual Rieslings that perfectly reflect the vintage and vineyard site. Their passion lies with the steep slopes: Erdener Prälat and Erdener Treppchen. What does that mean? Up to 100 percent manual labor – not just during the harvest. Immense effort, physical exertion, and maximum passion. And you can taste it in every sip.
