Pinot Blanc

Van Volxem's Pinot Blanc shows what the Saar can do when given time: a white wine with substance that combines the freshness of the northern location with ripe fruit and fine spice.

The Van Volxem winery is one of the most important estates on the Saar. Since its acquisition by Roman Niewodniczanski in 2000, the vineyards have been consistently focused on low yields and quality. Slate soils define the style: mineral, structured, and age-worthy. It is no coincidence that Van Volxem cultivates Pinot Blanc alongside Riesling—this grape variety benefits from the cool nights and long ripening period on these soils.

In the glass, the wine shines a bright golden yellow. The nose reveals white peach and ripe pear, along with a hint of almond and subtle spice. On the palate, a creamy texture, well-integrated acidity, and a lingering, slightly mineral finish—not a sumptuous crowd-pleaser, but a white wine with backbone.

Van Volxem

The Van Volxem winery is located in Wiltingen on the Saar River, south of Trier. Founded in 1700, it has been owned by Roman Niewodniczanski since 1999. The winery has a total vineyard area of 42 hectares, divided among nine different sites. The best sites include Wiltinger Gottesfuß, Kupp, Braunfels, and Scharzhofberger. The soils consist primarily of Devonian slate. Van Volxem wines are produced from 96% Riesling grapes and 4% Pinot Blanc grapes. Approximately 280,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
