Riesling Bockstein GG

The Bockstein vineyard is one of the great single sites of the Saar – and Van Volxem's Grosses Gewächs shows why: mineral, dense, with the long breath of a wine that needs and rewards time.

The Van Volxem winery in Wiltingen cultivates some of the oldest and steepest Riesling vineyards on the Saar River. Since Roman Niewodniczanski took over, the focus has been consistently on low yields, late harvesting, and gentle vinification – the result is dry Rieslings with exceptional substance and aging potential. The Bockstein vineyard, a steep slope above the Saar River with weathered Devonian slate, is one of the estate's flagship sites.

In the glass, ripe yellow peach, mirabelle plum, and a hint of pineapple are revealed – underpinned by a delicate slate minerality and the typical Saar character: cool, precise acidity that keeps the wine vibrant despite its ripeness and richness. The finish is salty and mineral, and long. Classically structured for a Grand Cru: fruit and tension in perfect balance.

Serving suggestion: Now, after a little aeration, enjoy with Dover sole with caper butter, scallops, or a mature Comté cheese. Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Drinking window 2025–2035.
