Riesling Bockstein GG

The Bockstein is one of the great single vineyards of the Saar – and Van Volxem's Grosses Gewächs shows why: mineral, dense, with the long breath of a wine that needs time and rewards it.

The Van Volxem winery in Wiltingen cultivates some of the oldest and steepest Riesling sites on the Saar. Since the takeover by Roman Niewodniczanski, the focus has been consistently on low yields, late harvest, and gentle vinification – the result is dry Rieslings with unusual substance and aging potential. The Bockstein, a steep slope above the Saar with weathered Devonian slate, is one of the estate's premier sites.

In the glass, it shows ripe yellow peach, mirabelle plum, and a hint of pineapple – underpinned by a fine slate spice and the typical Saar pull: cool, precise acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its ripeness and melt. The finish is salty-mineral and long. Classically structured for a Grosses Gewächs: fruit and tension in balance.

Tasting & Serving: Now with some air, pair with sole with caper butter, scallops, or a mature Comté. Serving temperature 10–12 °C.
