Wiltingen GOTTESFUSS Riesling "Alte Reben" VDP Grosse Lage®

The Gottesfuss is one of the best sites in the Saarland – and Van Volxem extracts a Riesling from the old vines there that takes its time before it really opens up.

Van Volxem in Wiltingen is one of the most important addresses in the Saar. Since 2000, Roman Niewodniczanski has consistently oriented the winery toward dry site-specific wines, meticulously reactivated the steep slopes, and relies on minimal intervention in the cellar. The Gottesfuss – a steep, slate-dominated south-facing slope directly above the Saar – counts as a VDP Große Lage® among the highest-classified vineyards in Germany.

On the nose, the old-vine vintage initially shows a spicy, slightly reductive side: citrus zest, white pepper, and herbs, underneath a dense minerality like freshly broken slate. On the palate, it develops juicy, ripe fruit – red currant, white currant, a hint of yellow plum – carried by lively acidity and a distinct saline minerality in the finish. The finish is taut, long, and sets a clear final point.

Best served between 10 and 12 °C. With a peak from 2025. Pairs with char with beurre blanc, grilled sea bass, scallops, or a mature goat cheese.
