Wiltingen GOTTESFUSS Riesling "Alte Reben" VDP Grosse Lage®

The Gottesfuss vineyard is one of the best sites in Saarland – and Van Volxem produces a Riesling from the old vines there that takes its time before it truly opens up.

Van Volxem in Wiltingen is one of the most important wineries on the Saar. Since 2000, Roman Niewodniczanski has consistently focused the estate on dry single-vineyard wines, meticulously revitalizing the steep slopes and employing minimal intervention in the cellar. The Gottesfuss vineyard – a steep, slate-rich south-facing slope directly above the Saar River – is a VDP Grosse Lage® (Grand Cru) vineyard, one of the highest-classified vineyards in Germany.

On the nose, this vintage from old vines initially displays a spicy, slightly reductive character: citrus peel, white pepper, and herbs, underpinned by a dense minerality reminiscent of freshly broken slate. On the palate, it develops juicy, ripe fruit – red currant, white currant, and a hint of yellow plum – supported by lively acidity and a pronounced saline minerality on the finish. The finish is taut, long, and provides a clear conclusion.

Best served between 10 and 12 °C . Drinking window: now until 2032, peaking from 2025. Pairs well with Arctic char with beurre blanc, grilled sea bass, scallops, or a mature goat cheese.
