Pinot Blanc

Van Volxem's Pinot Blanc shows what the Saar can do when given time: a white wine with substance that combines the freshness of the northern site with ripe fruit and fine spice.

The Van Volxem winery is one of the most important addresses on the Saar. Since the takeover by Roman Niewodniczanski in 2000, the sites have been consistently geared towards low yields and quality. Slate soils shape the style: mineral, taut, long-lived. It is no coincidence that Van Volxem also grows Pinot Blanc in addition to Riesling — the grape variety benefits from cool nights and long ripening times on these soils.

In the glass, the wine glows in a light golden yellow. The nose shows white peach and ripe pear, plus a hint of almond and subtle spice. On the palate, creamy texture, well-embedded acidity, and a lingering, slightly mineral finish — not a lush flatterer, but a white wine with backbone.

The Van Volxem winery is located in Wiltingen on the Saar, south of the city of Trier. The history of the winery dates back to the 3rd century and it has been owned by Roman Niewodniczanski since 2000. The winery has a total vineyard area of 42 hectares, which is divided into nine sites.

Among the best sites are Wiltinger Gottesfuß, Scharzhofberger, and Bockstein. The soils consist mainly of Devonian slate. 96% Riesling grapes and four percent Pinot Blanc grapes are grown for the production of Van Volxem wines. Approximately 280,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
