Goldberg Riesling GG

The Goldberg is one of the great steep slopes on the Saar – and Van Volxem extracts from it what the slate has to offer: a dry Riesling with pressure, depth, and a long line.

Roman Niewodniczanski has consistently focused Van Volxem on quality since 2000. The winery manages historic Saar sites, including the Goldberg near Wiltingen, using organic methods. The grapes are selectively hand-picked, the wine matures in large wooden barrels – no new wood that covers the origin, but aging that lets the site speak.

In the glass, the Goldberg GG shows what Saar Riesling means at a top level: ripe yellow plum, citrus peel, and a clear slate tone that feels like freshly broken stone. The acidity is present but integrated – no scratching, but a taut, mineral line that carries the wine from front to back. Medium to full body, silky mouthfeel, very long finish with a salty aftertaste.

VDP Member Estate

The Van Volxem winery is located in Wiltingen on the Saar, south of the city of Trier. The history of the winery dates back to the 3rd century and it has been owned by Roman Niewodniczanski since 2000. The winery has a total vineyard area of 42 hectares, which is divided into nine sites.

Among the best sites are Wiltinger Gottesfuß, Scharzhofberger, and Bockstein. The soils consist mainly of Devonian slate. 96% Riesling grapes and four percent Pinot Blanc grapes are grown for the production of Van Volxem wines. Approximately 280,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
