Kanzem ALTENBERG Riesling "Alte Reben" GG

The Kanzem Altenberg is one of the great Riesling sites of the Saar — and Van Volxem's "Alte Reben" shows what this steep slope can extract from old vines: complex, mineral, with a finish that lingers long.

Van Volxem in Wiltingen is one of the reference estates of the Saar. Since the takeover by Roman Niewodniczanski in the early 2000s, the sites have been consistently vinified dry — with the goal of bringing origin and grape variety into the glass as directly as possible. The Altenberg in Kanzem is a steep slope on weathered slate, known for its cool aromatics and distinct rock structure.

Cool and precise on the nose: herbal spice, dried flowers, a hint of pastry, and ripe stone fruit. On the palate, the wine shows a firm body with a slender structure — not a heavyweight, but with noticeable pressure. Peach and some spice accompany an intense rock and flint minerality. The finish is salty, dry, with fine astringency and long-lasting minerality.

Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. Pairs with zander fillet with beurre blanc, scallops, or a ripe mountain cheese.
