Kanzem ALTENBERG Riesling "Alte Reben" GG

The Kanzem Altenberg is one of the great Riesling sites of the Saar — and Van Volxem's “Alte Reben” shows what this steep slope can get out of old vines: complex, mineral, with a finish that lingers for a long time.

Van Volxem in Wiltingen is one of the Saar's benchmark estates. Since its acquisition by Roman Niewodniczanski in the early 2000s, the vineyards have been consistently vinified in a dry style—with the aim of conveying the origin and grape variety as directly as possible in the glass. The Altenberg vineyard in Kanzem is a steep slope on weathered slate, known for its cool aromatics and pronounced rock structure.

On the nose, cool and precise: herbal spice, dried flowers, a hint of pastry, and ripe stone fruit. On the palate, the wine displays a firm body with a lean structure—not heavy, but with noticeable power. Peach and a touch of spice accompany an intense minerality of rock and flint. The finish is salty, dry, with a fine astringency and lingering minerality.

Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. Drinking window: 2025–2034. Pairs well with pike-perch fillet with beurre blanc, scallops or a mature mountain cheese.
