Oberberg Bassgeige Spätburgunder
Brick-red color, classic cherry fruit, and a mineral length — the Bassgeige is Franz Keller's entry into the Pinot Noir world of the Kaiserstuhl, without compromising on style.
The Franz Keller winery is one of the defining names of the Kaiserstuhl. The family, now led in the second generation by Fritz Keller, has stood for decades for precise, Burgundian-oriented Pinot Noir from the volcanic soils of Oberbergen — including the renowned Bassgeige site, which gives the wine its name.
In the glass, it glows in a clear brick red. On the nose, it shows ripe sour cherry, a subtle hint of iron — typical for the mineral soils of the site — as well as a spicy cedar wood note in the background. On the palate, this interplay continues: fruit and spice interlock, carried by a fresh, lively acidity that makes the wine feel light-footed. The minerality ensures a persistent, dry finish with a pleasant medium length.
Serving temperature 16–17 °C. Pairs well with veal medallions with mushroom jus, venison saddle, or a ripe Époisses.

Franz Keller Winery – Baden wine culture since 1892. Today run by Fritz Keller, who, in addition to his winemaking, is also a hotelier and president of SC Freiburg. Just ten kilometers from the French border, in Oberbergen, lies one of Germany's largest and most internationally acclaimed wineries. 35 hectares of vineyards, spread across eight sites. Among the best are the Oberbergener Bassgeige and the Pulverbuck. Loess, volcanic rock, and weathered basalt – here, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc primarily thrive. 200,000 bottles full of character are produced annually. And for those who wish to extend their stay: the Hotel "Schwarzer Adler" and the Restaurant "Kellerwirtschaft" extend a warm welcome. Baden, as he lives.
