Famiglia Cotarella Poggio dei Gelsi Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone DOP
Poggio dei Gelsi comes from one of Italy's oldest and most unusual wine regions – and bears a name that dates back to the Middle Ages. Legend has it that a bishop had his vanguard mark suitable inns with good wine: with the cry "Est! " Where the wine was particularly good, they wrote "Est! Est!! " – and in Montefiascone, they did so three times.
The grapes grow on the hills surrounding Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio, one of Europe's largest volcanic lakes. The mineral-rich, volcanic tuff soil noticeably shapes the wine's character. Famiglia Cotarella – known in the Italian wine world through brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella – cultivates the Poggio dei Gelsi vineyard, bringing modern cellar technology to a traditionally rather rustic appellation.
In the glass, it displays a clear straw yellow color. The nose offers aromas of bright pear, peach blossom, and a hint of lemon zest. On the palate, it is fresh and light-bodied, with lively acidity and a pleasant spiciness on the finish – typical of the Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia grapes that dominate this DOC.
