Famiglia Cotarella Poggio dei Gelsi Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone DOP

The Poggio dei Gelsi comes from one of Italy's oldest and most whimsical wine regions – and bears a name that dates back to the Middle Ages. According to legend, a bishop had his scouts mark suitable inns with good wine: with the cry Est! Where the wine was particularly good, they wrote Est! Est!! – and in Montefiascone, three times.

The grapes grow on the hills around Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio, one of the largest volcanic lakes in Europe. The mineral-rich, volcanic tuff soil noticeably shapes the character of the wine. Famiglia Cotarella – known in the Italian wine world through brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella – manages the Poggio dei Gelsi site and brings modern cellar technology to a traditionally rather rustic appellation.

In the glass, it shows a clear straw yellow. On the nose, light pear, peach blossom, and a hint of lemon zest. On the palate, fresh and light-footed, with lively acidity and pleasant spice on the finish – typical for the Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia that dominate this DOC.

Serving temperature: 8–10 °C. Recommendation: Antipasti with Pecorino, grilled sea bass, pasta aglio e olio, or as an uncomplicated aperitif on warm evenings.
