Cusumano –
Sicily in bottles, by Diego and Alberto
Cusumano is a family winery from the heart of Sicily, founded in 1972 by Enrique Cusumano. Today, his sons Diego and Alberto run the company – with 502 hectares of vineyards, exclusively their own grapes, and a clear stance: no purchased fruit, no compromise on origin.
The soils tell the story of the island: limestone, clay, and sandstone in the flatter sites, lava and ash where Mount Etna leaves its influence. Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Syrah, and Inzolia grow on these soils – varieties that have shaped Sicily for centuries. The wines are not compromise products for the mass market, even if three million bottles annually might suggest the opposite: behind the numbers is a consistent craft that preserves old grape varieties and puts the character of the island in the foreground.
Whether the deep-fruited Nero d'Avola with its velvety structure or a fresh Inzolia with saline minerality – the wines from Cusumano show how multi-layered Sicily can taste. Ideal with grilled fish, pasta alla Norma, or a ripe Pecorino Siciliano.
