Villa Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling Grosses Gewächs dry

The Villa Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling Grosses Gewächs dry from Dr. Loosen is no ordinary Riesling – it's a wine that captures the essence of one of the most prestigious single vineyards in the Palatinate. For anyone who appreciates top-quality German Riesling and wants to understand the origins of its reputation, this wine is an indispensable experience.

The Forster Pechstein vineyard owes its name to the unusually high basalt content in the soil – volcanic rock that retains heat, improves drainage, and imparts a distinctive, stony, smoky minerality to the wine. Nestled in sandy-loamy soil and facing south-southeast, this vineyard produces Riesling with real substance: rich in extract, with precise acidity and a palate that lingers long after the last sip.

Grosses Gewächs is the highest quality level of the VDP for dry single-vineyard wines – hand-harvested, strictly selected, and limited to natural yields. You can taste the difference.

  • Location: Forster Pechstein, Pfalz – historic top vineyard, VDP Class 1
  • Soil: Basalt debris in sandy-loamy subsoil
  • Style: Dry, mineral, rich in extract, suitable for aging
  • Classification: Grosses Gewächs (GG), Dr. Loosen / Villa Wolf

At the table, it pairs brilliantly with grilled turbot, lobster, or scallops with butter sauce – as well as with aged Comté or goat cheese with herbs. Those who drink it neat should let it sit in the glass for a few minutes. Then the Pechstein reveals its true potential.

Dr. Loosen

The German winery is located in the Palatinate region and is managed by Dr. Ernst F. Loosen. Its 22 hectares of vineyards are divided among six different sites, including the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Erdener Treppchen, and the Graacher Himmelreich. The slate soils act as excellent heat reservoirs for cool nights, and the Moselle River reflects sunlight onto the steep slopes where the grapes ripen. The winery cultivates and uses almost exclusively Riesling grapes for its production. Only 2% of the wines are made from Pinot Noir varieties, with occasional use of Cabernet Sauvignon or Dornfelder. The family-run business produces up to 180,000 bottles of wine annually.
