This Rioja Crianza from Haro shows why the Tempranillo grape has found its home here: powerful yet velvety, with a long, ripe finish.
Bodegas Ramón Bilbao is located in the middle of the Rioja Alta, the region around Haro that is considered one of Spain's best sites for Tempranillo. Harvesting is done by hand on a good 75 hectares of the estate's own vineyards; under the leadership of Rodolfo Bastida, the winery has invested noticeably in technology and its barrel cellar in recent years. The wine is aged in barriques, which gives it its spicy depth.
In the nose, an interplay of dark fruits, almond wood, and a fine note of cinnamon unfolds. On the palate, it is powerful, yet soft and velvety in structure; the tannins are ripe and round. The finish is long and balanced, without any rough edges.
Serve the wine at about 16 to 18 degrees, ideally with braised lamb, aged Manchego, or a classic paella with chorizo. It also cuts a fine figure with winter braised dishes or as a companion to a convivial dinner with friends.

What does the Crianza pair best with?
Very versatile: It works just as well with grilled lamb or steak as it does with braised dishes. It also cuts a fine figure with tapas, chorizo, or a mature Manchego.
At what temperature should I serve it?
Best at 18 °C — i.e., slightly cooler than room temperature. If served too warm, the alcohol comes to the fore and masks the fruit.
Is this a wine for now or should I store it?
The Crianza is ready to drink now — the barrel aging has already integrated the tannins well. Those who let it lie for another year or two will get a bit more mellowness, but it is not necessary to wait.
What does "Crianza" actually mean?
Crianza is a legally regulated aging stage in Rioja: The wine must be aged for at least two years, at least one of which in oak barrels (barrique). This explains the wood and spice notes in the glass.
How much alcohol does the wine have and is it suitable for an everyday glass?
It has 13.5% ABV — a typical value for a Rioja Crianza. Well suited for a glass with dinner; it is powerful enough for spicy dishes without feeling too heavy.

Ramón Bilbao is one of the defining names of Rioja – founded in 1924 in Haro, the historic heart of Rioja Alta, the winery today stands for a style that combines classic craftsmanship with modern cellar technology. Since 1999, Rodolfo Bastida has led the house as oenologist and managing director and has shaped it into one of the most well-known Spanish wine brands.
Mineral clay soils under the influence of an Atlantic climate give the Tempranillo vines the structure and freshness that give the wines their unmistakable profile.
With 240 hectares of its own vineyards in Rioja, Rueda, and Rías Baixas, Ramón Bilbao has long been thinking beyond the borders of Rioja – and in 2018, it became the first winery in Spain to be awarded the "Wineries for Climate Protection" certification.
