Ramon Bilbao Rioja Reserva

A classic Rioja Reserva that shows why this category has been the benchmark for accessible yet characterful Spanish red wines for decades.

Ramón Bilbao is one of the well-known names in Rioja Alta. The winery was founded in 1924 in Haro — the capital of Rioja Alta, a few steps away from the famous Estación de Vinos. Today, Ramón Bilbao vinifies grapes from various vineyards in Rioja, with a clear focus on a fruit-forward style with solid structure.

The Reserva matures for at least 12 months in American oak barrels, followed by further bottle aging — the minimum requirement for the Reserva classification in the DOCa Rioja. Deep ruby red in the glass. On the nose, blackberry, ripe plum, and a hint of coconut, which American oak typically imparts. Round tannins on the palate, a moderate acidity that carries the body, and a pleasantly long finish with notes of vanilla and dried fruits.

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Goes well with leg of lamb with herbs, mature Manchego, or a plate of Iberian cold cuts — classic companions of Spanish table culture.

Ramón Bilbao

Ramón Bilbao is one of the most influential names in Rioja. Founded in 1924 in Haro, the historic heart of Rioja Alta, the winery today represents a style that combines classic craftsmanship with modern cellar technology. Since 1999, Rodolfo Bastida has led the estate as winemaker and managing director, transforming it into one of Spain's most renowned wine brands. Mineral-rich clay soils, influenced by the Atlantic climate, give the Tempranillo grapes the structure and freshness that lend the wines their distinctive character. With 240 hectares of its own vineyards in Rioja, Rueda, and Rías Baixas, Ramón Bilbao's vision extends far beyond the borders of Rioja – and in 2018 became the first winery in Spain to be certified as a "Wineries for Climate Protection."
