A classic Rioja Reserva that shows why this category has been considered the benchmark for accessible yet characterful Spanish red wines for decades.
The Ramón Bilbao Reserva is aged in American oak barriques for at least 12 months, followed by further bottle aging in accordance with the requirements of the DOCa Rioja. Deep ruby red in the glass. In the nose, blackberry, ripe plum, and a hint of vanilla, typical of American wood. On the palate, round tannins, a moderate acidity that carries the body, and a long finish with notes of vanilla and dried fruits.
Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Goes well with leg of lamb with herbs, aged Manchego, or a plate of Iberian cold cuts, classic companions of Spanish table culture.

How does the Ramon Bilbao Rioja Reserva 2019 taste?
Ripe blackberry and plum on the nose, plus a hint of coconut and vanilla from the American oak barrel. Round and accessible on the palate, with moderate acidity and a long finish with dried fruit notes—classic Rioja style without any rough edges.
What does the Reserva pair best with?
Lamb shank with herbs is the most obvious combination. It works just as well with aged Manchego, Iberian cold cuts, or grilled beef fillet—dishes with some fat and spice that can absorb its round tannins.
At what temperature should I serve the wine?
Best at 16–18 °C—that is, slightly cooler than room temperature. Placing it in the fridge shortly before serving or storing it in a cool place for an hour is sufficient.
Is the 2019 ready to drink now or should I cellar it?
It is ready to drink now and appears open and accessible. The drinking window extends until 2027—those who cellar it for another one to two years should experience slightly more integration of the wood notes, but there is no need to wait.
What does "Reserva" mean exactly for a Rioja?
The Reserva classification of the DOCa Rioja requires at least 12 months of barrel aging plus subsequent bottle aging. This distinguishes it from a simple Crianza and explains the more pronounced wood notes and slightly softer tannins.
How long does an opened bottle keep?
Well-sealed—for example with a wine stopper or the original cork—it keeps in the fridge for two to three days. After that, it loses fruit, but remains good for cooking.

With 240 hectares of its own vineyards in Rioja, Rueda, and Rías Baixas, Ramón Bilbao has long been thinking beyond the borders of Rioja – and in 2018, it became the first winery in Spain to be awarded the "Wineries for Climate Protection" certification.
