Gamla Syrah

A Syrah that shows what the high altitudes of Israel can do: grown in cool conditions, structured and built up, with real backbone.

Golan Heights Winery is situated on the Golan Heights plateau, at altitudes between 400 and 1,200 meters above sea level. The continental climate, with its cool nights, slows down the ripening process and results in aromas that don't develop in warmer climates. Founded in 1983, the winery is now one of Israel's most renowned producers – the Gamla line offers an accessible entry point into their portfolio without sacrificing depth.

In the glass: dark ruby red. On the nose, blackberry, ripe plum, and black tea, with a hint of tobacco spice. Twelve months of aging in barriques add a subtle vanilla note without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, medium-bodied, soft tannins, a spicy finish with a light peppery note – typical of a cooler-growing Syrah.

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Pairs well with leg of lamb with herbs, grilled beef, or a hearty lentil stew. Also a simple and enjoyable wine on its own in the evening. Ready to drink now, but will keep for another 2–3 years without any problems.

In 1983, four kibbutzim and moshavim joined forces and founded the winery in Katzrin. In 1992, winemaker Victor Schoenfeld joined, bringing experience from France and America. His influence contributed significantly to its success. The award-winning Yarden line is adorned with a mosaic-decorated oil lamp. "Yarden" – the Hebrew word for Jordan.
