Elena Walch Lagrein Selezione

Lagrein is one of the most idiosyncratic grape varieties in South Tyrol — deep ruby violet, dense tannins, and a spice you will hardly find elsewhere. The Elena Walch Selezione shows what this indigenous variety can do when it is in experienced hands.

The Elena Walch winery is one of the most renowned addresses in South Tyrol. Located in Tramin in the Überetsch, the Walch-Giovannini family manages vineyards that have been known for quality viticulture for generations. The Selezione line stands for hand-picked grapes and consistent cellar aging.

In the glass, the Lagrein shows an intense color with violet reflections. On the nose, dark berry fruit — blackberry, black cherry — underscored by violets and a fine spice from wood aging. On the palate, dense and full-bodied, with powerful, well-integrated tannins and an invigorating acid structure that gives the wine contour. The finish is long, slightly spicy, with a hint of cocoa.

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Pairs with braised beef, game ragù, or ripe mountain cheese like Graukäse from the Ahrntal.

Elena Walch

Elena Walch – an architect by passion, a winemaker by conviction. Since 1985, she has dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her vineyards. Her motto: "Good wine doesn't grow by itself!" She has uncompromisingly transformed the two South Tyrolean Cru vineyards, Castel Ringberg and Kastelaz, owned exclusively by her family. Piece by piece, she converted the pergola trellises into modern Guyot training systems with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The result: low yields, healthy grapes, gentle vinification with targeted use of oak. Fruity, elegant white wines – and red wines, pure "tigers on velvet paws." Top-class South Tyrolean wines with a clear signature.
