Villa Gresti is the more approachable sibling of the great San Leonardo — a Merlot-based red wine from Trentino that combines drinking pleasure and depth without requiring years of cellaring.

The San Leonardo winery is located in the Lagarina Valley south of Trento, where alpine coolness meets Mediterranean warmth. Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga runs the estate with a distinct style: Bordeaux-inspired blends from one of Italy's northernmost wine-growing regions. The Villa Gresti is made from 90% Merlot, complemented by 10% Carmenère—a grape variety that lends the wine structure and a characteristic spiciness.

In the glass, it displays dark cherry and blackberry, along with notes of cedar and a hint of graphite. The tannins are present but polished; the acidity keeps the wine lively without harshness. The finish is long, slightly spicy, with a mineral note that hints at its alpine origin.

Best served at 16–18 °C . Pairs well with leg of lamb with rosemary, roast beef, or a mature Pecorino cheese. Aging it for another one to two years will reward you with added complexity.
