San Leonardo Carménère

The San Leonardo Carménère shows what this grape variety, almost forgotten in Europe, can achieve when it ends up in the hands of an experienced winery: dark fruit, velvety mouthfeel and an unexpected elegance.

Tenuta San Leonardo is located in Vallagarina, in southern Trentino near the border with Veneto. The Guerrieri Gonzaga family has managed the estate since the 18th century—today, Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga is at its helm. Carménère was once widespread in Bordeaux before phylloxera devastated the vineyards; at San Leonardo, it survived in old rows of vines and is now vinified as a single varietal.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color with violet reflections. The nose is dominated by black cherry and blackberry, complemented by hints of green pepper and graphite—the typical Carménère profile. On the palate, soft, well-integrated tannins, medium acidity, and a long, spicy finish with a subtle licorice note.

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C . Pairs well with grilled lamb loin, wild boar sausage, or mature Pecorino cheese. Also delicious on its own as an evening drink.
