Planeta La Segreta Nero d'Avola

Sicily's sunshine captured in a bottle: Planeta's La Segreta Nero d'Avola shows what the island can do with red wine – depth, warmth and Mediterranean spice without heaviness.

The Planeta family has been cultivating vineyards at six different locations in Sicily since the 1990s and has made the Nero d'Avola grape variety internationally renowned. La Segreta comes from the heart of the island and combines the rustic power of the indigenous grape with a modern, approachable style.

In the glass, it shines a deep ruby red. The nose opens with ripe plums and dark wild berries, along with a hint of cocoa and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied with soft, well-integrated tannins – no harsh finish, but rather a smooth, lingering warmth. 92 points from James Suckling (2018 vintage) confirm the quality of this everyday wine.

Serve it at 16–18 °C with grilled lamb, pasta al ragù, or a mature pecorino. It's also a great choice for a casual evening.

Planeta

The descendants of the Planeta family have now grown up. Around the fortress of Ulmo in southwestern Sicily, where the land has been cultivated for five centuries, the spark ignited new ideas and projects for viticulture. Here, the first vineyard was planted with vines in 1985. Since then, various generations of brothers and sisters, children and grandchildren have worked side by side. Their perfect understanding is based not only on the harmony of their personalities and the complementarity of their skills, but above all on a united vision: the love for this land, the desire to protect it, and the ability to imagine a new way each day to give it value.
