Mulderbosch Steen op Hout - Chenin Blanc

Mulderbosch Steen op Hout - Chenin Blanc
Mulderbosch Steen op Hout is a Chenin Blanc that shows what South Africa can do with this grape variety: tropical fruitiness, vibrant acidity and a mineral depth that elevates the wine far beyond its price.
The Mulderbosch winery is located in Stellenbosch, one of the most prestigious wine-growing regions in the Cape. The name Steen op Hout —Afrikaans for "stone on wood"—refers to the combination of its mineral origin and aging in oak barrels. Chenin Blanc, traditionally called "Steen" in South Africa, has been cultivated here for decades and finds ideal conditions in Stellenbosch: cool sea breezes from the Atlantic, well-drained soils, and long ripening periods.
In the glass, the wine opens with aromas of papaya, gooseberry, and ripe melon, complemented by Chenin Blanc's typical notes of white pear, peach, and apricot, along with a delicate hint of flint. On the palate, lees aging contributes to a smooth, rounded texture—lively acidity and a salty-mineral note maintain the balance. The finish is persistent, clean, and structured.
Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. Pairs well with grilled sea bass, chicken with lemon and herbs, creamy pasta dishes, or mature goat cheese. Also a good choice as an aperitif.
