Markus Schneider Rooi Olifant

Markus Schneider manages his winery in Ellerstadt in the Palatinate and has made a name for himself with characterful, accessible wines. The Rooi Olifant — Afrikaans for "red elephant" — represents the uncomplicated side of his range: an everyday wine with attitude that still bears Schneider's signature. South Africa provides the ideal foundation for this: warm climate, deep soils, ripe fruit.

In the glass, it reveals dark berry fruit — blackberry and plum — with a hint of spice and a soft oak note in the background. The tannins are round, the acidity is moderate, and the finish is pleasant and uncomplicated. A red wine that needs no decanting time and is ready to drink immediately.

Best served at 16–18 °C. Pairs well with pasta in tomato sauce, grilled sausages, or a hearty lentil stew. It also cuts a fine figure as a companion to a relaxed barbecue evening.
