Kyrö Malt Wood Smoke Whisky

A Finnish malt whisky that combines smoke and sweetness into a distinctive Nordic style — far removed from peaty Islay smoke, closer to Finnish sauna culture.

The Kyrö Distillery from Isokyrö in Ostrobothnia has specialized in rye since 2014 and is one of the leading names in the new Finnish whisky scene. Their Malt Wood Smoke deviates from the rye focus: smoked barley, kilned over alder wood – a traditional Finnish malting method that produces a mild, resinous smoke instead of phenolic harshness.

On the nose, the whisky opens with vanilla, caramel, and soft, sweet smoke —warm and earthy, with a hint of roasted nuts. On the palate, malty sweetness and alder smoke follow, reminiscent of a campfire in a birch forest rather than the sea or peat. The finish is medium-long, slightly spicy, with a lingering smokiness.

Neat at room temperature, the smoky notes are most pronounced — a glass for cool evenings. A single ice cube tones down the smoke somewhat.

Kyrö Distillery GmbH

Kyrö Distillery comes from the heart of Finland – more precisely from Isokyrö, a small town in the province of Ostrobothnia. What began there as a group of friends enjoying rye whisky during a sauna evening has become one of the most exciting distilleries in Northern Europe.

What makes it special: Kyrö consistently uses Finnish rye – for their whisky as well as their gins. Napue Gin, for example, won the title of best contemporary gin in the world shortly after its launch. No coincidence, but the result of genuine passion for craftsmanship and homeland.

The bottles from Isokyrö tell stories of forests, frost, and a land that has found its own unique spirits identity. A must-see.
