Ornamental Gutedel Heugumber

Gutedel is considered by many to be a modest, everyday grape variety — the Heugumber from Ziereisen shows what is possible when one of Baden's oldest grape varieties meets artisanal standards.

The Ziereisen winery is located in Efringen-Kirchen in the Markgräflerland region, right on the border with Switzerland and Alsace. Hans-Peter Ziereisen has specialized in consistently maximizing the potential of native grape varieties—and Gutedel (Chasselas) is at home here like nowhere else in Germany. The Heugumber vineyard provides the foundation for a wine that goes far beyond the typical Gutedel profile.

In the glass, it displays a pale straw yellow color. The nose opens with yeast and a hint of grass, followed by yellow plum, apple, and a subtle nuttiness—accompanied by a slightly floral note. On the palate, the wine is lean and lively, with a fine salinity on the finish and a mineral bite that signals its readiness to drink. No heaviness, no oak—but plenty of texture and a surprising length.

Serving suggestion: Well chilled at 10–12 °C. Pairs well with tarte flambée with crème fraîche, herb quiche, fried freshwater fish, or a simple bread and cheese evening with young goat cheese. Drink now until 2026.
