Ungstein Weilberg Riesling GG Magnum

The Weilberg vineyard is one of the best sites in the Palatinate – and Rings demonstrates why with this Grand Cru in a magnum bottle. A dry Riesling with depth, tension, and the potential to continue developing for years to come.

Andreas and Steffen Rings cultivate their vineyard in Freinsheim with a precision that can be tasted in the glass. The Ungstein Weilberg vineyard lies on limestone and sandstone – soil that imparts structure and a fine minerality to the Riesling. The Grosses Gewächs, the highest quality level of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates), is produced exclusively in the best vintages from the oldest vines in the vineyard.

In the glass, the Weilberg Riesling displays aromas of citrus peel, pineapple, and a hint of white pepper. The acidity is present but integrated – not sharp, but a supporting line that keeps the wine long and vibrant. The finish is salty and mineral with a spicy aftertaste.

The magnum bottle further slows down the maturation process: Drinking window 2026–2036. Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Pairs well with pike-perch fillet with butter sauce, sweetbreads, or a mature mountain cheese.

Rings

The origins of today's VDP winery can be traced back to the parents of Steffen and Andreas Rings, who ran a mixed farm that continued to operate as such well into the 1990s. From 2000 onwards, Steffen Rings took over the business and restructured it into a dedicated winery. In 2008, Andreas Rings returned from his apprenticeship at the Wagner-Stempel winery and has since been managing the Freinsheim winery in the Palatinate region together with his brother Steffen. The approximately 40-hectare estate is planted with roughly equal numbers of red and white grape varieties. The vineyards feature diverse soils – gravelly sand, terra rossa (red earth), and limestone – where Riesling, Pinot Noir, and international grape varieties thrive. The individual vineyard sites are located in Freinsheim, Kallstein, Ungestein, and Leitstadt.
