"The Little Cross" QbA dry

A dark, multi-layered cuvée from the Palatinate — complex enough for a long evening, uncomplicated enough for a quick barbecue during the week.

Rings Winery in Freinsheim is one of the most reliable wineries in the Palatinate. Brothers Andreas and Christian Rings cultivate their vineyards with the aim of bringing the fruit of each vintage to the glass without any intervention. Their "Kleines Kreuz" (Little Cross) is their most approachable red wine—a cuvée of Merlot, St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.

Aged in new and used barriques, bottled unfiltered: In the glass, aromas of cassis and dark blackberry are revealed, underpinned by cold smoke, a hint of leather, and slightly herbaceous pine needles. The beef broth note on the finish is typical of the St. Laurent component—distinctive, yet integrated into a full-bodied structure.

Rings

The origins of today's VDP winery can be traced back to the parents of Steffen and Andreas Rings, who ran a mixed farm that continued to operate as such well into the 1990s. From 2000 onwards, Steffen Rings took over the business and restructured it into a dedicated winery. In 2008, Andreas Rings returned from his apprenticeship at the Wagner-Stempel winery and has since been managing the Freinsheim winery in the Palatinate region together with his brother Steffen. The approximately 40-hectare estate is planted with roughly equal numbers of red and white grape varieties. The vineyards feature diverse soils – gravelly sand, terra rossa (red earth), and limestone – where Riesling, Pinot Noir, and international grape varieties thrive. The individual vineyard sites are located in Freinsheim, Kallstein, Ungestein, and Leitstadt.
