Syrah dry "Gestad"
Syrah from Baden – that sounds unlikely. Hanspeter Ziereisen from Efringen-Kirchen makes it possible, and at a level that leaves no room for doubt. His Syrah "Gestad" grows on Jurassic limestone soils on the banks of the Rhine – "Gestad" is the Alemannic word for shoreline – and benefits from the warmth of the Rhine Rift Valley like almost no other location in the north.
Ziereisen was one of the first winemakers in Baden to seriously plant Syrah – with an eye toward the great wines of the Northern Rhône. The grapes are hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented, aged for 20 months in barriques, and bottled unfiltered and unfined. No intervention more than necessary.
A dark ruby violet in the glass. The nose: blackberry, cassis, black pepper, violets – and that typical spiciness that only Syrah can produce. On the palate, assertive and concentrated, with juicy freshness and a long, mineral finish.
Served at 16–18 °C with 12.5% ABV, it has an aging potential of up to 10 years. Anyone who thinks that great Syrah only comes from France should start rethinking their opinion here.
